Writing for the sciences
In writing for the sciences, we completed multiple assignments that allowed us to think deeply, understand our writing and the goal of each writing assignment and understand how to revise the assignments if needed revisions. Each assignment improves my writing as it is testing different parts of my writing skills. Each assignment has some part of the learning outcomes in them. Below I will explain how I have met these course learning outcomes and examples of how this was met.
Course Learning Outcome 1 – Explore and analyze, in writing and reading, a variety of genres and rhetorical situations.
I have met this course learning outcome throughout the semester when writing my scientific rhetorical analysis paper. I was able to explore and find an article that I was able to analyze and understand the article to find what the genre and the rhetorical situation are. This allowed me to understand where and who wrote the article, who is the intended audience, and what is the purpose of writing this article.
Course Learning Outcome 2– Develop strategies for reading, drafting, collaborating, revising, and editing.
I have met this course learning outcome throughout my semester in all my papers and work. In the beginning of each assignment we submit a draft and then in zoom we are split into discussion groups and peer review groups where we help each other and give each other advice and review. Before submitting the final draft we are to read our work again and edit it for grammatical errors or improvement. When researching for an article, I highlight important information that stands out in order to use the text in my paper. As we can see in the image below, there are minor edits I had to do after proof reading my essay.
Course Learning Outcomes 3– Recognize and practice key rhetorical terms and strategies when engaged in writing situations.
I have met this Course Learning Outcome throughout the semester when writing my scientific rhetorical analysis paper, my science controversy paper and Individual project. Throughout these papers I have to identify the rhetorical situations of the article and when I’m doing my paper I need to identify my rhetorical situations.
Course Learning Outcomes 4– Engage in the collaborative and social aspects of writing processes.
I have met this course’s learning outcome throughout the semester during class when the professor puts us into groups and we read each other’s draft and give feedback and comments that can better the paper. We also received feedback from the professor on our assignments and made corrections.
Course Learning Outcome 5- Understand and use print and digital technologies to address a range of audiences.
I have met this course learning outcome throughout the semester when presenting or uploading my documents to blackboard and doing my presentation. It is much easier to reach different ranges of audiences when dealing with digital technologies. For example, in class my final presentation was presented using google slides which I was able to show the class and give them some insight about my topic which was air pollution.
Course Learning Outcome 6– Locate research sources (including academic journal articles, magazine and newspaper articles) in the library’s databases or archives and on the Internet and evaluate them for credibility, accuracy, timeliness, and bias.
I have met this course’s learning outcome throughout the semester when Professor Gibbons came into our class and taught us how to search journals or scientific articles on different databases such as Jstor and Onefile. I used many articles from different databases in order to complete most of my papers. We were also taught how to categorize the searches to easily find what we are searching for.
Course Learning Outcome 7- Compose texts that integrate your stance with appropriate sources using strategies such as summary, critical analysis, interpretation, synthesis, and argumentation.
I have met this course learning outcome throughout the semester when writing my papers. In my public awareness campaign I present a stance on gun control. I tell the audience my side while implementing rhetorical situations. I also presented a stance on my scientific controversy paper and was able to summarize my stance and what’s happening. In the scientific rhetorical analysis I was able to identify the author’s stance.
Course Learning Outcome 8- Practice systematic application of citation conventions.
I have met this course learning outcome throughout the semester when doing research papers such as the scientific controversy paper or doing the individual project. When using a journal or article I had to cite it in MLA or APA form. I used Purdue Owl which helped me cite my sources.
