Introduction

The article “Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS CoV): The next steps” talks about a new type of virus that is called “Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus” also known as MERS CoV. This disease has been located in the middle east and has been reported by staff who are immigrants. Countries are at a huge risk of getting the virus from one of the staff who is in the hot zones. The staff comes from different parts of the world. MERS CoV has been imported into other countries from travelers and returning staff from the middle east. These symptoms of this virus are deadly such as multi-organ failure and cardiac arrest. The WHO (World Health Organization) is trying to prepare countries so the spread of the virus can be limited. They are trying to implement virological testing for those who have had some symptoms or are showing symptoms. They are also trying to implement labs in countries so they can look at patients who can be immune to the virus and try to find a cure or a vaccine.

Purpose

The purpose of this journal is to raise awareness and educate the general public about MERS-CoV so that people can start preparing to minimize the spread. Many people, like myself, have not heard of the MERS CoV, which puts the people that don’t know about it at an even higher risk, especially those that are within the middle east and those who travel from country to country. This information allows us to become prepared and more aware of the symptoms.

Stance

The Author’s stance is that we should start preparing and be more aware of MERS-CoV, because it is dangerous and has multiple symptoms which becomes hard to figure out if you have the virus, because some people are asymptomatic and can spread the virus without knowing.

Audience

The Audience of the article is the general public because this is informing the public about a new virus that is very deadly and that we should start preparing to minimize the spread as there are fewer cases before it becomes an outbreak. The audience can also be doctors, college students, or those that are close to the middle east since the outbreak is closer to them which can mean a person can have the virus.

 Genre

The genre of this writing is a journalistic article. It was published in the journal of public health policy. This is not a scientific report or a medical report.

Setting

The article was written in 2015 in India and during its year publication there were other outbreaks than the MERS-CoV such as the outbreak of the Zika virus, Human infection with avian influenza A(H7N9) virus in China, and the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. There was also other news such as the Paris Climate Accord.
